SPACIFIX | Much Love
Every now and then NZ produces a band that manages to inject fun and realness back into the Kiwi music scene. Take Supergroove, Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Black Seeds – they’ve all had their turn. Now it seems Spacifix are the chosen few to put the smiles back on our dials!
In this album you’ll find everything from catchy RnB to slow-jam reggae to old school funk, all rounded off with a serious dose of good vibes. Though at times songwriting and production is a little under-ripened, there’s a constant freshness in Much Love that promises big things for this exceedingly likeable nine-piece.

Uh, is it just me, or are they taking off of Red Hot Chili Peppers? I read Anthony Kiedis’ biography, and he talked about going to Auckland all the time, and how great the crowds were in New Zealand and Australia. Sooo I guess I can see how they’d be influenced. Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but from the review and the whole ‘Freaky Styley’ thing, I mean, HEL-LO! But, I haven’t even listened to their stuff. So we’ll see.

The one thing I hate about CCM (and I am a Christian, by the by) is that they market to be like the popular, mainstream, secular bands. Say, a Christian kid likes a band that their parents don’t approve of. So, the parents go out to their local Lifeway or w/e and buy this CD that they’ve heard sounds JUST like that other band– but clean, and toned down. This is alllll wrong. It doesn’t change anything in the kid’s head. Want to reach your kid? Try talking to them. Don’t let them do their own thing. That’s a huge mistake, and I’m not even a parent, I’ve just seen it happen to my friends and their parents. And has anyone ever heard of individuality? Be your own band for pete’s sake, don’t go ripping off of someone else!!
Sorry this has turned into a rant. Really and truly. *sigh*
and Stryper? Not metal. Metallica? Iron Maiden? Dio? Ozzy? Metal.
Ok. I’m done. I swear.
Thanks for your comments D. Totally hear what you’re saying about Christian “copy” bands and artists. At 13, you’re introduced to an artist who is an “Eminem” copy, and so often you get hooked on that music and start listening to the real thing anyway – kinda defeats the original purpose huh?!?
But it’s funny you mention that about Spacifix – I know of no band even remotely similar to them! I guess the closest would be the Jackson 5, but I think this comes down to their funky, danceable and catchy tunes (and their hair doos of course) more than actually being a Christian version of them (and even if they were, they’d be 30 years late!).
And these guys are definitely not marketed in the Christian CCM world – they’re Christian guys creating quite a stir in the genuine mainstream.
But totally hear what you’re saying D.
