IVA LAMKUM | Self-Titled EP

By Elliot Taylor

IVA LAMKUM | Self-Titled EP picTwo years in the making, Iva Lamkum’s debut has finally hit shelves. But hey, with such a slick EP we’ll forgive the 22-year-old for any delays. From the mighty capital city and of Samoan/Chinese descent, Iva sounds like she was incubated with Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Erykah Badu at birth.

Deep soul melodies meander across smooth jazz chords (often played on a Fender Rhodes, of course), all held down solidly by the sheen of a professionally-trained band. With Brad Dring (Rapture Ruckus) twidling the knobs, the EP is tight on almost every front – except maybe that horrid snare sound on track 4. If you’re looking for a bit more groove in your diet, Iva might be your ticket. Find some sunshine and fade away.

Elliot can't decide what he likes more: sleep or food. Put a mic in his hand and he will forget about both. When awake, he juggles Soul Purpose, pens, and hopes to one day change the world.

;seriously this lady has something that no other singer in N.z has or could be in the whole entire world. She is amazing live and I have to say there is sooooo many great singers out there but they all sound the same to me and I think the clever ones now a days are stepping into something opposite from the typical voices we all see & hear on those Idol shows but I know Iva Lamkum is so eventing something new here. So excited for the LP to drop and some of us believe she’s going to succeed big time

  3. Tammy writes:

TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU, SO MANY R&B SINGERS AND NOT ENOUGH ORIGINAL VOICES. IVA LAMKUM IS ONE OF MY CLOSE MATES AND SHE’S A VERY HUMBLE BUT FUNNY CHICK. HEY BE COOL TO CATCH YOU AT ONE OF HER GIGS.

Saw her on Good Morning, loved her sound so got her EP off iTunes, kinda reminds me of Ayeisha Woods with a jazzy flavour. NICE!

Interested in contacting her to see if she’s available to do a two day Girls Conference in Feburary 2010? Love her style would be perfect for our event!

    Hey wassup all!

Iva, is my favourite female artist! Found out about her a bit late but when i did, fell in love straight away lol The EP is just a little taste of what’s to come of her original self. Mellow husk, with a soulful but at the same time assertive voice and not to mess with her lol

Her style is original, her voice is amazing and the fact she’s just an underground sister, who’s puttin it down in her own way and fame is not on the top of to do list is solid!

    She’s in AKL – 27 June, 2009!
    Khuja Lounge, 9PM!

    Much Love Iva!
